Certain food additives, including nitrites and some food colorings, are also common headache triggers. Like tyramine, these additives may increase blood flow to the brain causing headaches in some people. It is not understood exactly why this happens. Some foods that cause a headache after eating are:

o Blue cheeses

o Brie

o Cheddar

o Stilton

o Feta

o Gorgonzola

o Muenster

This week I was grateful to have the opportunity to speak to a community group of about 60 retired men and women. When I start talking about “Eating When We are Hungry”, I always involve the audience by asking them “How many times on average would you eat in a normal day”? The majority is generally 3 times a day, being Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner and this particular group was no different.

I then shock them by telling them that I eat at least 7 times a day and have been for the last 14 years. You can see the look of disbelief on their faces because I only weigh 49 kilos, at about 5 foot 3 inches tall. The reason people don’t believe it is because their perception of “eating” is always big meals, they don’t recognise that you can simply have a snack. Consequently I eat 7 times a day, with 3 main meals and 4 snacks. However because I am having the snacks in between, my meals are small, slightly larger than my snacks but not what most people would consider a normal size meal.

At the end of my presentation I have a question and answer session. Someone always asks me what I eat in a day so they can get a picture of eating 7 times. So I thought I would share that with you. Please take note that we are all different and my meal size would be completely different to an adult male who is 6 foot 4 inches! This is simply to demonstrate that you can eat often throughout the day. By doing this you do not allow yourself to get ravenous and therefore have time to make appropriate choices. You also don’t over-eat, as you know you will have something else to eat when you are hungry again in a couple of hours.

You will notice that the majority of the food is healthy but I also have treats every single day such as chocolate and biscuits. Some days I will have ice cream or chippies. Also note that I don’t have an exact time when I eat, it is different every day depending on what I am doing and when I am actually hungry. We also have take-aways about once a fortnight, which is generally either pizza or fish and chips. I also make my own homemade pizza and fish and chips or hot dogs. Often on Sundays for breakfast, we will have pancakes or bacon and eggs.

I have not written this as an eating plan for you to follow but simply to demonstrate that you can eat little and often, be satisfied all the time and not put on weight.

Start listening to your body and eat when you are actually hungry not on a schedule!
